Tour Lead: Ciarán Tourish, best known as the nimble fiddler from Altan, is one of East Donegal’s most celebrated musical exports, recognized by fellow musicians worldwide as an unusually gifted player. To be singled out amid the hotbed of traditional music that is Donegal is no small feat.

Tour Details

Date: 1st July, 2020

Tourish grew up surrounded by Irish traditional music’s best, including fiddler Dinny McLaughlin, who shared his hometown of Buncrana. Dinny began teaching Ciarán the tin whistle from the age of six. After a few years he moved on to the fiddle, quickly mastering the instrument.

Ciarán is now recognised as one of the premier contemporary Irish fiddlers, who was an integral member of one of Ireland’s most beloved trad supergroups, Altan for over 27 years until 2017.  They were the first traditional Irish group to be signed to a major label when they signed with Virgin Records in 1995.  The group has collaborated with Dolly Parton, Enya, The Chieftains, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and many others.

His quick ear and a love of harmony and counterpoint have also led to several collaborations on non-Altan (and even non-Irish music) projects with a wide range of musicians and singers. He has worked with the likes of Matt Molloy, Mary Black, Maura O’Connell, Martin O’Connor, Dolores Keane, De Danann, and American musicians Jerry Douglas and Tim O’Brien.

Down the Line, Tourish’s first solo album, draws on this transatlantic cast of collaborators including Arty McGlynn, Paul Brady, Maura O’Connell, Tim O’Brien, Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas among others, as well as the musical versatility of its producer/artist/arranger. Tourish showcases both his fiddle and whistle, demonstrating his ability to play them as solo melody instruments, accompanying textures, or components of a dynamic ensemble sound.

We are delighted and privileged to have Ciarán on this journey with us.  I am sure you will agree, it will be a much coveted tour and places are limited so get in touch to ensure you don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to play along with, or to just enjoy, the music of Ciarán and friends.

Itinerary

Included in our diverse itinerary you will have the opportunity to enjoy castles, museums, ancient monuments, fortresses and Europe’s highest sea cliffs as well as boat trips.  We will also walk the rolling hills of Donegal’s Glenveagh National Park and experience the magnificent Glenveagh Castle. The majority of the sites we visit will be professionally guided and packed with information.

The Atlantic Ocean has left a spectacular imprint on our coastline and you can experience this in all its diversity as we journey along the Wild Atlantic Way.   You will become immersed in the Irish culture when we meet the locals and get an understanding of the fishing, weaving and other craft industries, as well as visiting picturesque villages and meeting the artisans who are creating the beautiful products.

A must for Star Wars fans is our visit to Malin Head “A Galaxy Far Far Away”, where part of The Last Jedi was filmed.

You will enjoy culinary delights each day for lunch and dinner in our hand-picked award winning venues, known for their amazing produce cooked to the highest standards, the fantastic service and of course the setting whether it be for historical or scenic value.

And of course, one of the most memorable highlights on this “bucket list” tour will be immersing yourself in the authentic Irish Pub Culture when we frequent the venues for the music Sessions each day and again in the evenings.   You can relax with the friendly locals in front of cosy turf fires and take a drop of the black stuff or a wee dram of the many amazing whiskeys on offer whilst experiencing some of the best traditional music delivered by our Lead, Ciaran Tourish, his accompanists and friends that will join us along the way.

Tours are open to musicians and non-musicians alike therefore, feel free to bring your instrument along. This is truly a luxurious getaway where you can nurture your soul and relax in the splendour that is Co. Donegal where a warm welcome awaits you.

Please read on for the full itinerary.

Day 1

After pick up by luxury coach, it’s “Destination Donegal” for a two night stay at the multi award winning Harvey’s Point Hotel. You can look forward to a spectacular evening’s entertainment beginning with a welcome reception and followed by a sumptuous four course meal. Then sit back and enjoy the famous Harvery’s Point Summer Cabaret hosted by Noel Cunningham.

Day 2

Today begins with visits to several of the area’s cultural and heritage sites. Our first port-of-call is a tour around the Killybegs Maritime & Heritage Centre then back to Donegal Town for a visit to Donegal Castle. After lunch at the Olde Castle Bar & Red Hugh’s Restaurant, it’s on to the Donegal Bay Waterbus where we will cruise in a state of the art 160 seater Waterbus, view the seal colony on Seal Island, see the Bluestack Mountains and Donegal Bays many islands. This evenings programme promises to be a unique experience. You will be taken to the stunning 5* Solis Lough Eske Castle where you will meet your Lead Musician, enjoy a fabulous four course dinner followed by an intimate musical evening hosted by Ciaran and friends.

Day 3

On day three we set off on our tour around the Wild Atlantic Way. Firstly, you get the opportunity to experience the highest sea cliffs in Europe, Sliabh Liag. Lunch and afternoon session will be at The Rusty Mackerel then we set off for the Glencolmcille Folk Village where you can get a glimpse into daily life as it was during past centuries. Then we visit Triona Design nestled in the picturesque town of Ardara where you will experience the history and witness the skill and craft that has gone into Donegal Tweed for generations. A night at The Nesbit Arms Hotel is on offer but not before enjoying a lively session at The Beehive Bar.

Day 4

We set off from Ardara and our first stop will be the Kilclooney Dolmen which dates from circa. 3500 BC, and is a very fine example of a dolmen (portal tomb or megalithic burial chamber) and is thought to be one of the best, if not the best, in Ireland. We follow along with WAW on a scenic drive through the small towns and villages of Rosbeg, Narin, Portnoo to Meenaleck and Leo’s Tavern, home of music artists Clannad, Enya and Moya Brennan. We will lunch here and enjoy an afternoon session before getting back on our luxury coach to continue our scenic drive to Bloody Foreland, Falcaragh and on to Dunfanaghy where we will be staying in The Shandon Hotel and visiting Patsy Dan’s Bar for our evening session.

Day 5

From The Shandon Hotel we set off for Horn Head today then drop down to The Poisoned Glen which lies at the foot of Mount Errigal. Here we take a step back in time and visit the homestead of the world renowned weaver Manus Ferry and enjoy stories of times gone by from their experienced tour guides. Then we enjoy the second cruise of the tour when we take a trip out on Dunlewey Lough where you will pass the Guinness estate (keep an eye out for the green lady who is said to haunt the house). One of the highlights of the Reel Donegal Experience Tour is next, when we visit Glenveagh National Park where we firstly lunch, take a tour of the Castle, then you will have the distinct pleasure of enjoying our afternoon session in the amazing Glenveagh Castle. Our lead, Ciaran Tourish and friends will delight you once again in this fairytale Castle, a unique experience for RIMT guests. After Glenveagh, we make our way via Fanad Head, Ballymastocker Beach and Rathmullan towards the lively town of Letterkenny where we will stay in the centrally located McGettigans Hotel. Tonight we dine in The Lemon Tree and our session will be in Lonely Planet’s named “Letterkenny’s most atmospheric pub”, The Cottage Bar.

Day 6

Today we are off to explore the Inishowen Peninsula in all its unspoilt beauty. But before we do that we stop off at Newmills Corn and Flax Mills. The oldest surviving building here is said to be 400 years old. Indeed, the whole complex is an interesting reminder of a stage in the industrial development of Ireland. From here we head off to the Stone Fort of Grianán of Aileach which sits on a hilltop in Inishowen, 250m above sea level. The origins of Grianán of Aileach fort are dated back to 1700 BC and it is linked to the Tuatha de Danann who invaded Ireland before the Celts. We lunch today at An Grianan Hotel. On route to Buncrana we pass through the village of Fahan where we will stop to visit the beautifully decorated 7th Century St Mura’s Cross. After this we will check into the Inishowen Gateway Hotel before exploring historical sites in Buncrana including the Amazing Grace Lookout Point and O’Doherty’s Keep where Theobald Wolfe Tone was held captive. You will dine tonight at The Red Door Country House Hotel in Fahan then back to The Drift Inn Buncrana for our session.

Day 7

We continue our tour of the Inishowen Peninsula when we visit Fort Dunree, and the Military Museum. Afterwards perhaps you will get a chance to walk the grounds and see for yourself one of the best collections of coast artillery guns in the world. Then off to Mamore Gap for a hair raising decent into the small village of Urris but worth it to experience the breathtaking natural beauty of the surroundings. On to Ballyliffin where we will lunch in Nancy’s Barn, where you can sample their world award-winning seafood chowder. From there we are off to The Doagh Famine Village where you will enjoy an animated guide lead tour through 1800s buildings with Irish history & culture exhibits. Our afternoon session will be held at Irelands most northerly Bar, Farrens Bar in Malin Head then back for our second night’s stay at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel in Buncrana, to get ready for our evening session which will be in O’Flaherty’s Bar, home to one of the longest running Traditional Irish music sessions in Donegal.

Day 8

We could not leave out the opportunity, being so close to the Northern Irish border, to include a visit to some of the iconic delights of the North. With this in mind, we will include a visit to the Walled City of Derry, a guided tour on the very walls themselves and a walk across the Peace Bridge. We will then move on to visit the renowned Bushmills Distillery, The World’s Oldest Distillery were a chance to taste and learn more about their range of whiskies awaits. You will spend some time in the fabulous Dunluce Castle then on to experience the magic of the Giants Causeway before settling into your amazing accommodation at The Titanic Hotel, Belfast for the final farewell dinner and evening’s entertainment.
